How to combine folios at a fund house
Combining duplicate folios leaves you one account at each fund house: one statement, and one bank account, nominee and set of contact details to keep up to date.

Over the years it is easy to collect several folios at one fund house: one opened through a distributor, another on the fund house's website, a third with a different joint holder. What a folio number is explains how that happens. Combining them, also called consolidating, moves every scheme into the one folio you choose to keep.
Find your folios
Your CAS lists every folio under your PAN, at every fund house. On MF Central or the fund house's website, the folios linked to your PAN appear when you sign in. Note each folio number, its holders and its mode of holding.
What must match
Folios can be combined only when they have:
- the same holders, in the same order
- the same PAN for each holder, with KYC done
- the same mode of holding, such as Joint or Anyone or survivor
- the same tax status, such as resident individual or NRI
An old folio opened without a PAN needs one added, with KYC, before it can be combined.
Folios with different holders stay separate, and so does a minor's folio. Folios at different fund houses cannot be combined either, because each fund house keeps its own records.
Check the folio you keep
The combined folio keeps the details of the folio you keep: its bank account, nominee, email and mobile. Check them first, and update them if needed: how to change your bank, address or mobile and how to add a nominee.
How to place the request
- Sign in to MF Central, the fund house's website, or the website of its registrar (CAMS or KFintech).
- Choose the request to consolidate folios.
- Pick the folio to keep, then the folios to merge into it.
- Confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile or email.
On paper, write to the fund house or its registrar with the folio numbers and the folio to keep, signed by every holder, and hand it in at a branch or a service centre.
The change usually shows within a few working days, and the fund house confirms it by email.
What moves across
- Units move with their original purchase dates and costs, so combining folios is not a sale. There is no tax and no exit load, and the holding periods for tax and exit load carry on.
- Plans and options stay as they are.
- SIPs and STPs running in a folio being merged may need to be registered again in the folio you keep. Ask the fund house before you place the request, so that no instalment is missed.
Questions
Does combining folios cost anything?
No. Fund houses and registrars do not charge for it, and since nothing is sold there is no tax or exit load.
Can I combine folios at two different fund houses?
No. Each fund house keeps its own records. To see all your folios together, use your CAS or MF Central.
What if the holders are in a different order?
Those folios cannot be combined, and the holders of a folio, or their order, cannot be changed except when a holder dies.
Will my SIP keep running?
A SIP in a folio being merged may need to be registered again in the folio you keep. Ask the fund house before you place the request.
Each fund page has its returns, risk, costs, managers and everything it holds.
