How much of two or more funds is the same: the same holdings, the same industries and the same sectors. Add up to ten funds.
Two of the largest funds in a popular category
The typical overlap of a category's funds, and the most and least alike
Overlap is the part of two funds' portfolios that is the same. If two funds each put 8% in HDFC Bank and 6% in Infosys, those holdings make 14% of overlap. 100% would mean the two funds hold exactly the same things.
For every company or bond both funds hold, take the smaller of the two weights, then add them up. Cash is left out. The figures use each fund's latest monthly portfolio.
Holdings overlap counts the same companies. Industry overlap counts the same kinds of business, such as banks or IT software, even when the companies differ. Sector overlap is broader again, such as financial services or healthcare. It is usually the highest of the three.
Two funds with a lot in common tend to rise and fall together, so holding both spreads your money less than holding two funds that own different things.
It depends on the category. The pages for each category show the typical overlap of their funds and the most and least alike pairs.
