How to stop or pause a SIP
Stopping a SIP does not sell anything. It stops the next debits, and your units stay where they are.

Stopping a SIP
- Sign in to the fund house's website or app, MF Central or the registrar's website.
- Find the SIP in your list of registered SIPs and choose Cancel or Stop.
- Pick a reason from the list and confirm with the OTP.
Fund houses have to process a cancellation within two working days. Place the request a few working days before the next SIP date, or that instalment may still be debited. A SIP set up with an end date stops on its own after the last instalment.
What happens to your units
Stopping a SIP does not redeem anything. The units you have bought stay in your folio and move with the fund's NAV, and you can redeem them whenever you choose, or after the three-year lock-in for ELSS. To take the money out, place a redemption separately: see how to redeem a mutual fund.
The folio stays open. You can add money to it or start a new SIP in it at any time.
Pausing instead
Many fund houses let you pause a SIP for a set number of months, after which it restarts on its own. How long a pause can last and how often you can use it vary, so check the fund house's terms. A pause is requested the same way as a cancellation, a few working days before the next date.
The bank mandate
A SIP is paid through a bank mandate (e-NACH or UPI AutoPay). Stopping the SIP stops the debits for that SIP, but the mandate itself stays registered. You can keep it for a future SIP, or cancel it separately through the fund house or your bank. One mandate can serve several SIPs at the same fund house, so check that no other SIP uses it before you cancel it.
Charges
The fund house charges nothing for stopping or pausing a SIP.
Questions
What if an instalment is debited after I asked to stop the SIP?
If the request reached the fund house too late for that date, the instalment buys units as usual. The units are yours, and you can redeem them if you do not want to keep them.
Can I change the SIP amount instead of stopping it?
Some fund houses let you change the amount of a running SIP. Otherwise, start a new SIP for the new amount and stop the old one.
Does stopping a SIP close my folio?
No. The folio stays open with your units in it.
Each fund page has its returns, risk, costs, managers and everything it holds.
