A nominee is the person the fund house transfers your units to if you die. Adding one takes a few minutes online.

A [nominee](https://discovermf.com/glossary/nominee) receives your units if you die. Without one, your family has to prove their claim with more documents, such as a legal heir certificate or a succession certificate, before the fund house transfers the units.

## The rules

- You can name **up to 10 nominees** in each folio.
- You can give each nominee a percentage share, adding up to 100%. If you give none, the units are split equally.
- A folio held by **one person** must have a nominee or an opt-out declaration.
- In a **joint folio**, nomination is optional. On a holder's death the units pass to the surviving holders, and to the nominees only after the last holder dies.
- For each nominee you give their name, relationship to you, contact details and one identity number, such as PAN, driving licence number or the last four digits of Aadhaar.
- A minor can be a nominee, with a guardian named for them.
- Only you can make or change the nomination, not someone holding your power of attorney.

## Adding or changing a nominee online

1. Sign in to the fund house's website or app, [MF Central](https://discovermf.com/guides/mf-central) or the registrar's site.
2. Choose the nomination request and the folios it applies to.
3. Add each nominee with their details and share.
4. Confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile or email.

A new nomination replaces the earlier one, and you can change it whenever you like. To opt out, choose the opt-out on the same page and confirm it with the OTP.

## Nominee and legal heir

A nomination tells the fund house whom to transfer the units to. It does not decide who owns them under your will or the succession law that applies to you. If the legal heirs are different people, they can claim from the nominee. When the nominees and the heirs are the same people, the transfer settles the matter.

## Transmission on death

The transfer of units to a nominee is called **transmission**.

1. The nominee sends the fund house or the registrar a transmission request form.
2. They attach the death certificate and complete their own KYC, if they have not already.
3. The fund house moves the units into a folio in the nominee's name. The nominee can then hold or redeem them.

Transmission is not a sale for tax. When the nominee later redeems, the gain is worked out from the original purchase cost and date.

## Questions

### What happens if there is no nominee?

The legal heirs can claim the units with documents such as a will, a legal heir certificate or a succession certificate. The fund house sets out what it needs, which can depend on the amount.

### Does one nomination cover all my funds?

A nomination is made per folio. MF Central can apply it to several folios in one request.

### Can I change my nominee later?

Yes, as often as you like. The latest nomination replaces the earlier one.
