Every mutual fund investor in India completes [KYC](https://discovermf.com/glossary/kyc) (know your customer) before investing. The record is kept by a **KYC registration agency** ([KRA](https://discovermf.com/glossary/kra)), so KYC done once is accepted by every fund house, and by MF Central and MF Utilities.

## The KYC registration agencies

Five KRAs are registered with SEBI:

- CVL (CDSL Ventures)
- NDML (NSDL Database Management)
- CAMS KRA
- KFintech KRA
- DotEx (part of NSE)

They share records, so it does not matter which one holds yours. Any of their websites shows your status, and [what your KYC status means](https://discovermf.com/guides/kyc-status) explains the four statuses.

## What you need

- **PAN**, linked to your Aadhaar
- **Aadhaar**, with your current mobile number registered for the OTP
- **A mobile number and email** of your own
- A phone camera, for a live photo and a picture of your signature

## Online with Aadhaar

1. Go to a KRA's website, or start an investment on a fund house's website or app. Most of them offer KYC online when your PAN has none.
2. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar, and verify with the OTP sent to the mobile linked to Aadhaar. Some sites fetch the details through DigiLocker.
3. Fill in the rest of the form: occupation, income range, tax residence and whether you are a politically exposed person.
4. Complete the in-person verification with a short video or live photo on your phone.
5. Sign the form electronically with an Aadhaar OTP.

The KRA checks the record, usually within a few working days, and your status becomes **KYC Validated**.

## In person

If your Aadhaar has no mobile number linked, or you prefer paper, fill in the KYC form at a fund house branch or a CAMS or KFintech service centre. Take your PAN and an address proof such as Aadhaar, a passport, a voter ID or a driving licence, with self-attested copies. The staff verify you in person. KYC done with a document other than Aadhaar usually shows as **KYC Registered**.

## CKYC and your KIN

Your KYC details are also uploaded to the Central KYC Records Registry run by **CERSAI**, which banks and insurers use as well. It gives you a 14-digit **KYC Identification Number (KIN)**. Some forms ask for it, and quoting it can save you sending documents again. See [CKYC](https://discovermf.com/glossary/ckyc).

## Done once

You do not repeat KYC for a new fund or a new fund house. You update it when your details change: [how to update your bank, address or mobile](https://discovermf.com/guides/update-bank-address-mobile).

## Questions

### Is mutual fund KYC free?

Yes. Fund houses, the registrars and the KRAs do not charge investors for KYC.

### Is the KYC for my demat account the same?

Usually, yes. Brokers and depository participants use the same KRAs, so KYC done for a demat account is found when you invest in mutual funds.

### How long does KYC take?

The online steps take a few minutes. The KRA usually completes its checks within a few working days.
