# What a folio number is and how to merge folios

Each fund house gives you an account number called a folio. Over the years it is easy to end up with several at the same fund house.

A [folio](https://discovermf.com/glossary/folio) is your account with one fund house. One folio can hold any number of that fund house's schemes, and its number appears on every confirmation and statement. The holders, the bank account, the nominee and the contact details are all recorded per folio.

Quote the folio number when you write to the fund house or place a request on paper. Online, the folios linked to your PAN appear when you sign in.

## Why you may have several

A purchase can open a new folio at the same fund house when it is made:

- through a different route, such as a distributor once and the fund house's website later
- with different joint holders, or the same holders in a different order
- with a different mode of holding, such as "anyone or survivor" instead of "joint"

Each of these is a separate account, with its own bank account and nominee on record.

## Merging folios

Folios at the same fund house can be merged when they have the same holders in the same order, the same PAN for each holder and the same mode of holding.

1. Place a consolidation request with the fund house, its registrar (CAMS or KFintech) or on [MF Central](https://discovermf.com/guides/mf-central).
2. Name the folio to keep and the folios to merge into it.
3. Sign the request, or confirm it with an OTP online.

The merged folio keeps the bank account, nominee and contact details of the folio you keep, so check those first. The units move with their original purchase dates and costs, so merging folios is not a sale and carries no tax or exit load.

Merging folios does not change the plan or option you hold.

## Folios at different fund houses

These cannot be merged, because each fund house keeps its own records. To see them together, use MF Central or your [Consolidated Account Statement](https://discovermf.com/guides/cas-statement), which lists every folio under your PAN.

## Questions

### Where can I find my folio number?

On any purchase confirmation, account statement or CAS, and in your account on the fund house's website, MF Central or MF Utilities.

### Is a folio the same as a demat account?

No. A folio is held with the fund house and its registrar. Units in a demat account are held with a depository, NSDL or CDSL, and have no folio.
