A capital gains statement lists every redemption, switch, STP transfer and SWP withdrawal in a financial year (April to March): the units sold, when they were bought and for how much, what they sold for, and the gain or loss. It covers realised gains only; units you still hold are not in it.

## Where to get it

- **MF Central**: one statement for funds across fund houses.
- **CAMS or KFintech**: on either registrar's website, for the funds it serves, sent by email as a password-protected PDF.
- **The fund house**: on its website or app, for its own funds.

On MF Central:

1. Sign in with your PAN and the OTP.
2. Open the statements section and choose the capital gains statement.
3. Pick the financial year.
4. Download it or have it emailed to you.

## What it shows

| Column | What it is |
|---|---|
| Purchase date and cost | When each unit was bought and for how much |
| Sale date and value | When it was sold and for how much |
| Short or long term | Which side of the holding-period line the units fall on |
| Gain or loss | Sale value minus cost |

For equity funds, units held more than 12 months are long term. For most other funds the line is 24 months, and debt fund units bought from 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate however long you hold them. [How mutual funds are taxed](https://discovermf.com/guides/mutual-fund-tax) has the rates.

For equity fund units bought before 1 February 2018, the statement also shows their value on 31 January 2018, which the tax rules use in working out the cost of long-term gains.

## What you need it for

It gives the figures for the capital gains schedule of your income tax return. Long-term gains from equity funds are reported scheme by scheme in Schedule 112A. [How to report mutual funds in your ITR](https://discovermf.com/guides/report-mutual-funds-in-itr) goes through it.

Losses appear too. They can be set off against gains under the tax rules, and carried forward for up to eight years if you file your return on time.

## Questions

### Does the statement include switches?

Yes. A switch from one scheme to another is a redemption for tax and is listed with its gain.

### Do I need a separate statement for each fund house?

Not if you use MF Central, which covers funds across fund houses. A fund house's own statement covers only its funds.

### Is tax deducted on these gains?

Not for resident investors. You pay it when you file your return, or as advance tax during the year if that applies to you.
